India based IDFC First Bank and Sarvam AI have announced establishing a joint Research and Development (R&D) lab bringing together the skills of banking experts and AI research and engineering, to achieve the vision of building a “self-improving bank.”
According to Sarvam, the partnership aims to go beyond deployment of latest AI models as the two organizations will work on systems that can understand a bank’s processes, operate within regulatory and internal controls, learn from real-world outcomes and improve over time.
Explaining the concept of self-improving bank, Sarvam AI said in a statement, “A bank produces a large amount of useful signal through everyday operation, including customer interactions, decisions, human corrections, exceptions and eventual outcomes. A self-improving system should be able to learn from this experience, evaluate what worked and use that signal to improve the next version.”
According to Sarvam AI, the proposed IDFC FIRST Bank Sarvam AI R&D Lab will explore ways to turn this experience into a continuous source of learning for AI systems.
The initiative will also include a “post-training factory” designed to evaluate, adapt and improve AI models using banking-specific tasks, human feedback and production outcomes. This could allow the bank to adopt newer AI capabilities without having to redesign its technology stack every time underlying models evolve.
The Lab will also focus on frontier AI research relevant to financial services, while placing strong emphasis on reliability, security, explainability and governance.
Regulator-grade safety and AI security will form another major area of research. AI systems deployed in banking need to remain observable, auditable and controllable even as they become more capable. The Lab will therefore develop evaluation, governance and security mechanisms alongside AI capabilities.
The partnership comes as financial institutions increasingly explore how advanced AI can be integrated into core operations. Rather than treating AI as a one-time technology upgrade, IDFC FIRST Bank and Sarvam are aiming to build an institutional capability that can continuously evaluate new developments, learn from experience and improve.
