Stressing on the importance of training teachers in Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology, tools and its use cases in education, India’s top educators discussed the prospects of artificial intelligence (AI) in overhauling India’s educational system in an event in Delhi-NCR on Thursday.
Speaking to AI Frontpage, Dr Zaheer Khan, chairman of Federation of Education in India (FOEII) said that education should not be just confined to degrees, but should focus on skill development as well. In respect to the vision of National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, he stressed on the importance of inclusive and equitable education, applied learning methodologies and soft skills.
“In order to equip our students with artificial intelligence, we first have to train our teachers. We have introduced a refresher course in AI for teachers so that they can adapt to the technology and impart that knowledge to students,” said Dr Khan while speaking to this correspondent at the third edition of the Bharat Shiksha Expo 2026, which began on Thursday at the India Expo Centre and Mart in Greater Noida of Delhi-NCR.
Dr Khan highlighted the need to train teachers across schools and universities in artificial intelligence
“ I don’t think students are becoming over-dependent on AI tools, as AI has not been implemented on a full scale,” he replied when asked whether students are becoming overly-dependent on AI tools.
Dr Khan further stressed the importance of properly training teachers in the field of artificial intelligence. “ We are trying to ensure that teachers and professors in schools and universities are trained well in artificial intelligence,” he stated.
The other dignitaries who attended the inaugural session of three-day-event were Sudeep Sarcar, CEO of India Exposition Mart; Anil Pratham, IPS and chairperson of the advisory board of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Sports Foundation; and Dr. Sandeep Singh Kaura, advisor at NSDC, along with other academicians, institutional leaders etc.
During a panel discussion on NEP 2020 in action: Transforming classrooms and driving measurable impact on skills, learning and employability, Professor Dhowmya Bhatt, dean, Internal Quality Assurance Cell, SRM Institute of Science and Technology said without equipping individuals with AI, they can’t be expected to be future ready and highlighted that as far as exponential learning in NEP 2020 is concerned AI plays a very key role.
“Artificial intelligence is a mandate now, one has to upskill themselves in it. Specially management students, they are the decision makers, problem solvers, so they should know how to use artificial intelligence in its full capacity.” said Dr Binkey Srivastava, dean MBA, KIET, deemed to be university.
She further emphasized that artificial intelligence will make an individual a valuable asset to an organization.
