The OpenAI Foundation announced a new programme ‘AI for Civil Society and Philanthropy’ to equip non-profits and community groups with advanced AI tools for addressing urgent social issues, beginning with a $100 million commitment to a healthcare initiative focused on improving access to lifesaving treatments.
According to OpenAI, the program will support nonprofits, academic institutions, community groups and philanthropic organizations in adopting AI through funding, technical expertise and shared infrastructure.
The Foundation said the programme will initially focus on three areas: using AI to improve essential services, helping civil society organizations adopt AI responsibly, and building shared infrastructure so that effective AI tools and lessons can benefit the wider social sector.

The first initiative under the programme is a $100 million commitment to the Common Health Coalition to launch Breakthroughs to follow -Through (B2F), a national effort aimed at using AI to help ensure medical advances reach people who can benefit from them.
“B2F will work alongside state health departments, health systems, healthcare providers, and community organizations. It will begin with a goal of doubling hepatitis C cure rates in Alabama, Illinois, Louisiana, and Massachusetts to start, with additional regions to be announced,” the Foundation said.
It further highlighted that AI-enabled tools could help care teams identify and reconnect patients who have fallen out of care, synthesizing records, tracking progress, and directing limited staff capacity where it can have the greatest impact.
“The goal is not to replace the people delivering care, but to help them reach more patients while reducing administrative burden,” it mentioned adding that B2F will extend this infrastructure to other areas where proven treatments and interventions are not reaching the people who need them, including HIV prevention and certain curable cancers.
The foundation stressed that nonprofits, academic institutions, community coalitions, and philanthropic organizations deliver essential services and can better understand the challenges where technology could make the greatest impact.
It further mentioned that its initiative People-First AI Fund, have enabled organizations to engage with AI to serve their communities. In 2025, the OpenAI Foundation launched the People-First AI Fund to support trusted community organizations working at the intersection of innovation and public good and this year in June it announced a $50 million commitment to the fund.
