Anthropic has created a new team amid growing global debate over how increasingly capable AI systems could affect elections, public institutions, and governance.

The AI and Rule of Law team will operate within the Anthropic Institute, an externally facing organization focused on studying how AI systems affect the economy, democratic institutions, and the people and organizations that interact with them.

According to Anthropic, the team will examine how increasingly powerful AI systems could affect executive power, courts, legislatures, electoral systems, and other institutions that underpin democratic governance.

The company said the team will explore both technical and policy approaches to addressing potential vulnerabilities created by advanced AI.

Research areas include evaluating whether frontier AI systems align with constitutional norms and rule-of-law principles, identifying institutional vulnerabilities created by AI, examining emerging legal questions, and exploring applications that could strengthen civic participation and public administration.

Anthropic is also hiring for the new team and is seeking candidates with expertise in AI and fields such as law, political science, government, or public policy.

In a post on X, Matthew Botvinick, a Member of the Technical Staff at Anthropic who leads work on AI and the rule of law, said the company had opened its first role for the effort.

The San Francisco-based Member of Staff, AI & Rule of Law role carries an annual salary range of $295,000 to $345,000.
