Singapore and Luxembourg are looking to deepen cooperation in emerging and critical technologies, including quantum and artificial intelligence (AI), Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said.

Wong made the speech during an official lunch hosted in honour of Luxembourg’s Prime Minister Luc Frieden, marking his first trip to Singapore in the role.

“PM Frieden and I had a good discussion on how we can deepen our longstanding partnership, including in financial services, and emerging and critical technologies such as space, quantum-secure communications, cybersecurity and AI,” Wong said in a social media post.

The two countries are also looking to deepen cooperation in space and satellite communications.

Luxembourg inaugurated its first resident embassy in Singapore two months ago.

Wong said that despite being geographically distant, Singapore and Luxembourg share similarities as small countries surrounded by larger neighbours, with limited domestic markets and no natural resources.

The two countries have developed into major financial and business hubs and maintain strong investment ties. Luxembourg is Singapore’s largest investor from the European Union, while Singapore is Luxembourg’s second-largest investment destination in the EU.

Wong added that their ties date back to 1971, when Luxembourg’s national cargo carrier Cargolux began flying to Singapore, four years before formal diplomatic relations were established.

Wong also pointed to Luxembourg’s support for European integration and Singapore’s advocacy for a stronger and more integrated ASEAN, saying the countries could work together to strengthen ties between ASEAN and the European Union, especially as Singapore takes on the ASEAN Chairmanship next year.

The development comes as Singapore continues to expand its AI ecosystem through workforce transition programmes, global standards for testing generative AI systems, cybersecurity preparedness against AI-enabled threats, and new data centre capacity to support growing computing demand.
