Want “Professional Excellence” But AI is “Unreliable”: Anthropic Releases Largest Survey

In order to understand the public perception of AI, that includes expectations, fears and hype, Anthropic Inc, world’s leading AI startup, has published the world’s largest qualitative survey on 80,500 respondents across 159 countries.

The survey, which offers both micro and macro perspective of how people perceive artificial intelligence was published on Wednesday, offering unique insights into what changes people expect AI to bring to their lives.

We asked our users about their hopes and concerns with AI, as well as how their perspectives connect to their actual experiences with the technology. Over one week in December, we invited everyone with a Claude.ai account to sit down with Anthropic Interviewer,” read the report from Anthropic.

According to Anthropic, the majority of the survey respondents wanted “professional excellence” from AI at 18.8% followed by “personal transformation” at 13.7%, “life management” at 13.5%, “time freedom” at 11.1%, and “financial independence” at 9.7%.

When it came to whether AI had ever helped them in their vision, a large majority (81%) responded with yes, with 32% choosing productivity while 18.9% said AI brought no changes to their lives.

When asked about their fears related to AI, “unreliability” topped the charts with 26.7%. At least 22.3% respondents also worried about AI having an impact on jobs and economy and 21.9% respondents were worried about loss of human autonomy due to AI. 16.3% respondents were worried about over-reliance on AI causing loss of skills in humans while 14.7% were concerned about lack of government regulations around AI. 13.6 % respondents showed worries related to deep fakes and misinformation from AI while 13.1% were concerned about privacy and surveillance related to AI.

When it came to positive sentiments towards AI, countries like India (70%), Nigeria (81%), Brazil (71%), Peru (81%), Chile (75%), Mexico (76%), Saudi Arabia (72%), Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia and Philippines, all at 73%, scored high. 

While countries like US (66%), Canada (65%), Italy (64%), UK (63%), Finland (65%) and Sweden (65%) showed comparatively lower positive sentiments towards AI.
