In a step towards the country’s expansion of AI infrastructure, Singapore has approved four operators–Digital Realty, Equinix, Keppel Data Centres and ST Telemedia Global Data Centres- to expand their data centre capacity.
The four operators have been allocated 50 megawatts of new capacity, through competitive allocation calls complying with green energy standards. An essential green energy required powering at least 50% of the proposed Data Centre through green energy pathways such as biomethane, low-carbon ammonia, low-carbon hydrogen, and/or vertical building-integrated photovoltaics/building-applied photovoltaics.
Singapore officials informed that DCs supported under DC-CFA2 will locate their facilities on Jurong Island and the Jurong Town Corporation (JTC) is developing a low-carbon DC park on Jurong Island to leverage potential low-carbon technology synergies within the island’s ecosystem.
The Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB) and the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) announced the results on Wednesday after a total of 20 proposals under the second Data Centre-Call for Application (“DC-CFA2”) were reviewed in the past year.
Terming it a significant step towards Singapore’s commitment to “partner the Data Centre sector to grow sustainably and contribute to strategic and economic priorities.”
“The four supported data centres have committed to exceed the minimum sustainability requirements imposed for DC-CFA2, and will power more than 50% of their DC capacity from green energy sources. These DCs will also be best-in-class in energy efficiency by adopting advanced technologies such as liquid cooling1 and using 100% energy-efficient IT equipment,” read a joint statement from EDB and IMDA.
