OpenAI has acquired four-year-old Orchestra Bio, a startup building AI agents to help pharmaceutical companies manage drug development. The company plans to bring Orchestra Bio’s team and technology together with Rosalind, its AI models and tools for life sciences research.

“Our goal is to help scientists make discoveries and manage the work needed to turn them into treatments that reach patients sooner,” OpenAI said.

Orchestra Bio’s platform enables scientists and AI agents to work together to monitor drug-development programs and manage complex dependencies. According to OpenAI, problems in one part of a drug program can affect other activities, making it important to identify potential delays and assess their impact.

Orchestra Bio founder and CEO Ashoka Rajendra said the company was founded four years ago to help biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies advance their drug-development programs.

San Francisco-based Orchestra had reportedly raised around $20 million as of 2025 from backers including Andreessen Horowitz, Atria and 8VC.

In a post on X, he said, “AI has now reached an inflection point where people and agents can take this on together.”

The acquisition brings Orchestra Bio’s operational coordination capabilities together with Rosalind’s scientific research tools. GPT-Rosalind helps researchers reason through questions in biology and chemistry, while Rosalind Workbench connects AI capabilities with scientific tools and data to support research analysis and experiment planning.

Developing a new medicine typically takes around 10 to 15 years from target discovery to regulatory approval in the United States, according to OpenAI. The acquisition combines AI tools for scientific research with software that coordinates drug-development programs, from experiment design and data analysis to managing the activities required to advance potential treatments.

OpenAI also highlighted its collaborations with Novo Nordisk and Moderna. Its partnership with Novo Nordisk aims to accelerate research and development and improve commercial execution while maintaining strong governance. At Moderna, AI is helping teams translate insights from complex data into experimental workflows, with the potential to accelerate research and development.
