Nvidia has unveiled OpenShell, an open-source runtime designed to secure autonomous AI agents, and introduced a new AI factory system aimed at reducing the time required to bring data centres into operation.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang announced the developments at the company’s GTC event in Berlin, as the chipmaker looks to address growing demand for computing power and security tools as businesses deploy more AI agents.

OpenShell is designed to isolate AI agents from the wider system and enforce policies governing their access to files, networks and other resources. Nvidia also introduced Sentry, a hardware-based monitoring layer that can track agent activity and enforce security controls.

“Security isn’t a wish. It’s technology and engineering,” Huang said during the presentation, highlighting the need to limit the permissions granted to autonomous AI systems.

AI agents can reason, plan, iterate and use tools to complete tasks, but these capabilities also increase their consumption of tokens and, in turn, demand for GPUs, Huang said.

Nvidia also introduced DSX Pod, an integrated system that brings together computing racks, networking, power and cooling infrastructure for AI factories. Huang said the system could cut the time between delivery and the start of token production from four to five months to about a month.

Huang highlighted that the growing use of AI agents is changing computing requirements because agents consume more tokens as they reason through tasks and use tools. He outlined five components of an AI agent: the model, the agent harness, a secure sandbox, knowledge and tools. OpenShell is intended to provide a secure environment in which agents operate.

Huang described AI as a new industrial revolution and outlined an AI economy built on five layers: energy, advanced computing, AI factories, models and applications.

He also stressed the need for Europe to develop its own AI ecosystem and said companies across industries would need to adopt AI to benefit from the technology.

Nvidia has more than 12,000 partners in Europe, Hunag said, adding that the company had invested nearly $10 billion in startups and major partnerships across the region over the previous year. He also cited investments in 14 startups during a recent trip covering France, UK and Sweden.
