Mistral AI has partnered with Mozilla to bring its AI models to Firefox Smart Window, Mozilla’s AI-powered browsing assistant, with a focus on privacy, control and choice while browsing the web.

Smart Window, currently available in beta, is now powered by Mistral models for users in France and North America. Mozilla and Mistral expect the service to expand to the UK and Germany later this year.

Mistral AI said the partnership brings together two companies that have advocated for open-source technology and provides a platform where different AI providers can compete.

“This isn’t just a product partnership. A browser shouldn’t be a one-way funnel,” said Anthony Enzor-DeMeo, CEO of Mozilla Corporation.

Mistral said it is adapting its models for regional languages and dialects, with the aim of improving their understanding of local languages and cultural nuances.

Arthur Mensch, co-founder and CEO of Mistral, said, “Together, we are bringing privacy, control and choice to AI-powered web browsing.”

Mistral has also described the partnership as part of its efforts to bring sovereign AI to a wider audience.

As part of privacy measures, conversations in Firefox Smart Window are not saved on Mozilla’s servers by default, while Mistral has agreed to zero data retention.
