IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw will chair the group, with MoS Jitin Prasada as Vice-Chairperson. Members include senior officials such as the Chief Economic Advisor and CEO of NITI Aayog, spanning science, economy, technology, and national security.
The inter-ministerial group will coordinate AI policy across all ministries and regulators, replacing the fragmented approach where each department acted independently. Its role includes ensuring legal compliance and identifying regulatory gaps. It will classify AI use cases as “deploy,” “pilot,” or “defer,” build a 10-year AI deployment roadmap and assess labor market impacts.
A Technology and Policy Expert Committee (TPEC) will provide advisory support on emerging technologies and global AI trends.
The formation follows recommendations in India’s AI Governance Guidelines and the Economic Survey, both of which called for a single centralized AI authority.
