The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI ) has launched Operation Riptide, a joint law enforcement effort to dismantle cybercriminal networks and the services that enable them to operate.
The agency said the operation has already resulted in arrests, indictments and infrastructure takedowns. According to the FBI, all 56 field offices are participating in the effort, with enforcement actions planned over the next 60 days.
The announcement comes as cybercrime continues to inflict growing financial losses on individuals and businesses. Last year, Americans filed more than a million complaints about cybercrime and online fraud, reporting losses of more than $20 billion, FBI officials said.
The officials added that the losses increased 26% from a year ago.
While the FBI did not specifically link Operation Riptide to AI-related crime, the agency has separately warned about the growing use of artificial intelligence in fraud and online scams.
Officials said Operation Riptide aims to increase pressure on cybercriminal networks by disrupting revenue streams, degrading operational capabilities and raising the cost of conducting cybercrime.
“Cybercriminals and nation-state actors have become more sophisticated in their attacks on victims across the United States and around the globe,” an FBI official said during the announcement.
