With an aim to promote transparency and accountability in artificial intelligence adoption, the Government of Canada is asking its citizens their viewpoint on AI, its application and the extent to which they are comfortable interacting with AI agents.
According to the Canadian government, the public consultation is an effort to increase transparency in order to help Canadians understand when they are interacting with AI systems, help businesses make informed decisions about the AI products they adopt, and give governments and organizations the information they need to develop policies and research that shape the citizens’ experience with AI.
The consultation is part of the country’s broader vision under its National Artificial Intelligence Strategy: AI for All, which seeks to promote responsible development and use of AI across the country.
Under the anonymous public opinion survey, the Canadian government has identified five areas where transparency issues arise and where further action may be warranted.
These are detecting and identifying AI-generated content, empowering individuals to know when they are interacting with an AI system, improving the availability of consistent and understandable information about AI systems, including their development, capabilities and limitations, enabling the tracking of serious incidents related to AI systems and advancing ways to better track the activity and interactions of AI agents.

The questions range from when should citizens be told that they are interacting with an AI agent, whether an AI generated picture or video should have clear identity markers and how serious AI incidents should be reported.
Canada’s National Artificial Intelligence Strategy: AI for All is a five-year roadmap which outlines the government’s plans to bring new legislation, investments and programmes to promote responsible adoption of AI, in a way that serves all the citizens.
“At its core, AI for All is grounded in the principle that the benefits of AI must be shared widely, ensuring that workers, businesses and communities across Canada can access and benefit from AI,” the government highlighted.
In order to achieve these goals, the government is opening a dialogue on opportunities to enhance AI transparency so that Canadians and businesses can make informed decisions about using, adopting and engaging with AI and that governments, researchers and civil society organizations have the information they need to shape AI policy and research.
Following the consultation, the government will review submissions and publish a “What We Heard report”. “Depending on the volume of submissions, AI tools may be used to process the feedback received,” the government mentioned.
