Apple is expected to place artificial intelligence at the heart of its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2026, which begins Monday in Cupertino, California. The event is anticipated to showcase Apple’s most significant AI advancements yet, including a major overhaul of Siri. This year’s conference also carries added significance as it is widely expected to be the final WWDC led by CEO Tim Cook before a planned leadership transition to Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering John Ternus later this year.

As in previous years, WWDC is attended by thousands of software developers from all corners of the globe and is Apple’s biggest venue to announce new and improved software advancements. For 2023, however, the focus on what innovations Apple intends to roll out in the increasingly competitive and changing world of Artificial Intelligence (AI), has gripped the tech world and will likely be one of the biggest stories of WWDC.

Analysts anticipate a significant expansion of AI capabilities across Apple’s devices with particular emphasis on Siri. This evolution would represent the most fundamental change to Apple’s virtual assistant thus far by adding greater conversational skills, enhanced ability to understand context, and multi-tasking capabilities (multiple requests at the same time during one conversation).

With the rapidly increasing pace at which rivals have released more sophisticated AI assistants/AI-powered productivity tools, Apple finds itself under pressure to remain competitive. While competitors have been quickly releasing much more advanced AI assistants, Apple has adopted a more conservative approach by slowly integrating AI technologies across its platform.

Analysts believe an upgraded version of Siri could be an essential component of Apple’s overall strategy to connect services and devices within the iPhone/iPad/Mac ecosystem in a much more seamless manner. The additional AI functionality could increase user interaction with the Apple ecosystem and create new development opportunities.

While WWDC primarily focuses on software development, analysts will also be looking for information that indicates Apple’s longer-term product development plan. Examples of this would include possible new “foldable” devices, new Smart Home technology, and next generation wearable technology that might be revealed via updates to the Apple platforms and via tools made available to developers.

Apple’s conference comes when they are experiencing very critical changes, both in terms of leadership within and the massive technology alterations affecting how we work with computers globally. Therefore, many people expect Apple this year to demonstrate exactly what their future AI strategy will be.
