American tech giant Apple is developing an indigenous Artificial Intelligence model for the Chinese market in collaboration with Alibaba Group, as per a report by Reuters news agency,
According to the report, Apple is looking at a tectonic shift in how it operates in China by deploying its own AI model rather than relying on third-party local companies.
The move comes as Apple prepares to launch its Apple Intelligence suite in China in the next few months.
In other markets, Apple works with models such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, but it has faced major regulatory and availability restrictions in China.
According to the Reuters report, the China-specific model by Apple is being developed in collaboration with Alibaba.
Previously, Apple had relied on Chinese companies including Alibaba and Baidu to provide AI technology for the iPhone and other devices in mainland China. Apple’s generative AI service has now been registered by China’s Cyberspace Administration, marking an important step towards launch.
As per the current arrangement, Alibaba is expected to offer Qwen to Apple for iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Vision Pro devices across China. Baidu’s technology is also likely to make an impact.
While China remains an important market for Apple, the company has been facing stiffer competition from local players. The absence of Apple Intelligence from iPhones sold in China is said to be one of the reasons for decreased consumer demand.
