Delhi University (DU) and AMD have partnered to train up to 10,000 students in artificial intelligence over the next year, equipping them to build, test and deploy AI applications using industry-grade tools.
Under the MoU, AMD will bring its AI Engage Developer Program to Delhi University, giving students and faculty hands-on access to its open-source ROCm AI software platform, AI learning curriculum, technical workshops, open software ecosystems and cloud-based GPU resources for experimentation, along with developer GPU cloud credits.
“Students need access to the AI platform. Currently, they do not have enough resources, or rather, no resources, for stable AI infrastructure. The first requirement is to make them aware of what AI is, its functions and the different use cases in which it can be applied. This is the first exercise to make them aware and give them access to AI infrastructure,” said Prof. Sanjeev Singh, Dean of the Faculty of Technology at Delhi University, in a conversation with AI FrontPage. Singh said the collaboration will also allow students to develop their own AI models for different use cases. With students coming from diverse academic departments, they will be able to work on applications tailored to the requirements of their respective fields.
DU will introduce an evaluation mechanism to assess the AI skills acquired by participating students, Singh said. Students will be assessed on different parameters to measure their progress and categorized according to different levels of AI proficiency, ranging from basic to advanced.
The programme will begin this month, initially focusing on postgraduate students from relevant departments before expanding across the university to cover both undergraduate and postgraduate students, according to Singh.
DU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Yogesh Singh said such collaborations can help narrow the gap between academic learning and industry needs.
Jaya Jagadish, Country Head and SVP Engineering at AMD India, said the collaboration is intended to give students early access to the platforms and tools used in real-world AI development. “Through our collaboration with the University of Delhi, we are helping students move from learning AI concepts to building AI solutions,” Jagadish said.
