The U.S. National Science Foundation announced a $100 million initiative under NSF State and Regional AI Infrastructure Hubs Program to drive “AI-enabled scientific discovery and innovations” by expanding access to compute, data and other AI resources to researchers, educators and students across the country.

According to a statement by the US NSF on Thursday, the program comes in the wake of recently released ‘Science: A New Golden Age’ report published by White House Office of Science and Technology Policy Director Michael Kratsios in July 2026.

The program aims to foster the development of AI-enabled scientific discoveries by uniting state authorities, universities, industry representatives and philanthropists.

As part of the initiative, regional hubs will be established which will provide researchers with modern computing infrastructure, data storage and AI-enabled tools necessary for their scientific work. The project aims to bridge the gaps in AI infrastructure which is distributed unevenly across the country.

According to the NSF managers, the hubs will be utilized in different areas of science and will assist the companies and organizations in working on modern computing facilities. In addition to the establishment of cutting-edge infrastructure, the project will provide workforce training for professionals able to assist scientists and educators in the usage of AI tools.

Brian Stone, acting NSF director, has stated that the emergence of AI technologies leads to transformation in science and that access to AI infrastructure must be a priority in order to maintain the leadership of the U.S. in research and innovation.

He mentioned that the initiative will help improve regional technological ecosystems and prepare future generations of scientists and engineers.

Initially, the National Science Foundation intends to fund up to ten AI Infrastructure Hubs, where each hub would cater to a state or regional partnership. These hubs would cooperate with local businesses to align future workforce training with the job market demand.

The program would also connect regions to national facilities, such as the National AI Research Resource, so that scientists can share data and access more computing power when necessary.
