The Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) announced plans to hire 100 ‘AI-specialists’ for their upcoming Global AI Center of Excellence (CoE) in Singapore with an aim to develop artificial intelligence capabilities that can be scaled across the multi-national bank’s global network.

The CoE aims to build a “pipeline of talent across natural language processing, data science, AI governance, and human-centred design, and we’ll work with world-leading educational institutions and government bodies in Singapore”, informed HSBC in a statement released on Monday.

According to a statement posted by HSBC Singapore CEO Kee Joo Wong on LinkedIn, the 100 AI specialists will work alongside David Rice, HSBC’s Chief AI Officer and teams overseeing the bank’s wealth management and global payments solutions.

The bank also intends to integrate AI for enhancing customers’ wealth journey conversations through Agentic AI systems and developing AI-enabled digital payments in the initial phase of CoE Singapore.

“As we approach our 150th anniversary, Singapore has long been an important hub for HSBC. With its strong and dynamic innovation ecosystem, world-class talent and trusted regulatory environment, it is the ideal place to build AI capabilities that can serve our customers locally and eventually scale across our international network. The new AI CoE that will be established by the second half of 2026 will hire over 100 AI specialists to build capabilities for global application. As Asia’s #1 wealth manager and with Singapore’s growing status as a wealth hub, we also plan to hire a further 100 relationship managers for wealth over the next two years,” said Wong.

To strengthen its AI talent pipeline, HSBC also informed that it will work with Singapore’s universities and government agencies to develop future-ready skills. The bank has also confirmed that it will create opportunities for recent graduates amid growing concerns about employment prospects in the technology sector.

In addition to expanding its AI operations, HSBC will hire 100 additional relationship managers in Singapore’s premier and private banking businesses over the next two years to support rising demand from high-net-worth and ultra-high-net-worth clients in the region. Training initiatives, including partnerships with institutions such as London Business School, will also be expanded.

Commenting on the investment, HSBC Group CEO Georges Elhedery said that Singapore’s strong talent pool, innovation ecosystem and position as a global financial hub make it an ideal location for the bank’s AI strategy.
