From 10 Downing Street to Alan Turing Institute: Sam Cannicott Takes Strategy Helm

On secondment from the UK government, Cannicott brings experience leading the Prime Minister's AI Compute Taskforce and helping shape national AI initiatives as he joins the institute's leadership team.

Sam Cannicott has joined the Alan Turing Institute’s executive team as Chief Strategy and Delivery Officer, bringing experience from No. 10 Downing Street, where he most recently served as Director leading the Prime Minister’s AI Compute Taskforce.

Named after British mathematician and computing pioneer Alan Turing, whose pioneering work laid the intellectual foundations for modern artificial intelligence, the Alan Turing Institute is the UK’s national institute for data science and AI.

Cannicott said on LinkedIn that he is joining the Alan Turing Institute on secondment from the UK’s Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT).

He said he was “really excited” to join the institute, describing it as having “a critical role to play” in shaping the future development of artificial intelligence and applying the technology to “some of the knottiest problems we face.”

Earlier in his government career, Cannicott served as Deputy Director at DSIT, where he led the UK government’s Office for AI and oversaw wider digital regulation policy. He also served as Deputy Director at the Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation.

On his appointment, Alan Turing Institute CEO George Williamson said his experience across No. 10 Downing Street, DSIT and the UK AI Security Institute (AISI), together with his work on the team behind the 2023 Bletchley Park AI Safety Summit and the UK’s AI Action Plan, positions him well to help lead the institute deliver its strategy alongside its partners across academia, industry and government.

Reflecting on his time in the civil service, Cannicott said joining the UK government in 2018 had become “one of the best decisions I’ve ever made,” despite initially expecting it to be “slow, bureaucratic and maybe a little bit boring.”

Headquartered at the British Library in London, the Alan Turing Institute was established in 2015 and serves as the UK’s national institute for data science and artificial intelligence. The institute aims to bring together universities, government and industry to advance AI and data science research and their real-world applications.
