Karnataka will establish India’s first government-led AI university and an AI innovation hub, announced the chief minister of the state DK Shivakumar at the Google I/O connect event held on Tuesday at the Bangalore international exhibition centre.

Speaking at the event, the chief minister mentioned that the AI innovation hub will bring together startups, researchers, academics and industries for development of AI-led solutions in Karnataka. Meanwhile the AI university will be set up on a 100-acre campus in Bengaluru, with regional campuses in Kalaburagi, Belagavi, Hubballi Dharwad, Mangaluru and Mysuru.

He also informed that AI education will be introduced from Class VI onwards highlighting that the initiative will equip young minds with foundational AI skills and nurture future innovators. “We are taking AI beyond research labs as we are looking towards introducing AI at school level,” the minister stated.

The government is also planning to establish green data centres in the coastal district of the state as well near Bengaluru. In a post on X the minister expressed that the government is committed towards making the state “AI capital of India” and is looking forward to create world class technology hubs in Mysuru, Mangaluru, Hubballi-Dharwad, Belagavi and Kalaburagi so that global opportunities can reach young people across every region of the state.

“Bengaluru’s emergence as one of the world’s top five AI cities and the home of nearly 40% of India’s unicorn startups is a testament to Karnataka’s talent, innovation ecosystem and entrepreneurial spirit. While we take pride in these achievements, our vision is far greater. We are committed to making Karnataka the AI Capital of India,” Shivakumar tweeted.

“To turn this vision into reality, we are establishing India’s first Government-led AI University and an AI Innovation Hub. We are introducing AI education from the school level and building next generation Green Data Centres along Karnataka’s coast and near Bengaluru to power the AI economy. Through our Beyond Bengaluru vision, we are also creating world class technology hubs in Mysuru, Mangaluru, Hubballi-Dharwad, Belagavi and Kalaburagi so that global opportunities reach talented young people across every region of our State,” he posted on X.

The minister also launched the Karnataka AI Policy, giving more details about the policy, he said,” Through our government first policy, we are also ready to become the first customer for innovative startup solutions, giving our entrepreneurs the confidence to build, test and scale their ideas. Karnataka will continue to lead with innovation, inclusivity and a clear vision for the future.

The chief minister at the event invited Google to strengthen the partnership by supporting the government in its next phase of development in terms of AI. He assured support to the company in taking forward the vision of the government.

The chief minister stressed that technology cannot replace humanity and its true purpose is to empower people and improve lives. “From providing AI-enabled agricultural advisory services in Kannada for our farmers to strengthening rural healthcare and transforming education, we are ensuring that technology serves every citizen,” the minister said.

However, recently the chief minister had said that AI could result in “loss of 50% jobs” in Bengaluru. He described AI as a serious challenge for the labour market and said governments must prepare for large-scale disruption.

“We know the future of AI, this will cut a lot of jobs. I am also an educationist by choice and I could foresee that more than 50% of jobs will be cut in Bengaluru and other cities of India. But still, Bengaluru has a very big space, as a future,” said Shivakumar.
