Microsoft Bets $1 Billion on Thailand for Cloud and AI Expansion

In furtherance of its aggressive expansion in South East Asia, Microsoft announced an investment of $1 billion in Cloud and AI infrastructure across Thailand on Tuesday.

The announcement was made by Microsoft following a meeting in Bangkok between Thailand Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and company’s Vice Chair and President Brad Smith.

“As the cloud and AI become central to economic growth and national competitiveness, countries need both access to world-class technology and the know-how to put it to work. Microsoft is proud to support Thailand’s vision for secure cloud and AI, combining trusted infrastructure, secure platforms, and skills so AI adoption translates into real competitiveness and job creation,” said Brad Smith.

According to a statement released by Microsoft, the company plans to invest $1 billion from 2026 to 2028 under its  Advancing National Growth, Prosperity, and Global Competitiveness with AI initiative.

Microsoft claims the investment will help skill millions of Thai citizens across every sector of the economy.

“Building on a long-term commitment to upskilling the people of Thailand, Microsoft’s efforts have already helped over 2 million people acquire AI skills over the past 2 years, that includes equipping students with essential technological skills needed in the AI era ,” read a statement from Microsoft.

The Bangkok investment by Microsoft is in furtherance of its expansion into SE Asia with $1.7 billion investment in Indonesia and $2.2 billion in Malaysia to develop AI infrastructure and train the workers.
