Anthropic is the only major U.S. AI developer absent from a joint letter signed by more than 75 technology companies urging Congress to support open-weight AI models. While OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, Meta and others backed the initiative, Anthropic’s decision has drawn attention, particularly as the letter defends AI distillation, a practice the company has repeatedly criticized in disputes involving Chinese AI firms
