Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a roundtable meet with leading CEOs of semiconductor industry, ahead of the SEMICON India 2026 conference, calling upon the semiconductor industry for greater industry participation in skilling and innovation in emerging technologies such as AI and Quantum Computing.
India is all set to host three day SEMICON India 2026 conference in New Delhi from September 17-19, which will feature more than 600 participating companies and is expected to attract around 50,000 visitors, with representatives from 52 countries, more than 400 executives and over 150 speakers.
With the theme ‘Silicon to systems: Building the ecosystem’, the conference is India’s attempt to attract leading semiconductor companies from US and South East Asia to invest in India.
During the roundtable meet, PM Modi referred to the Indian government’s target of training one crore people in AI, adding that “ India’s talent pool, combined with the experience and capabilities of global industry leaders, can create significant opportunities.”

“Prime Minister reiterated the Government’s commitment to a predictable and responsive policy environment, while emphasizing that policies must evolve in line with technological advancements and industry requirements. He invited industry leaders to share suggestions on policy and administrative measures and assured them that their inputs would be given due consideration in further strengthening the sector. He encouraged industry leaders to actively participate in the next phase of India’s semiconductor growth,” read statement from Press Information Bureau.
The meeting was attended by CEOs, Heads and representatives of various organizations including SEMI, Micron, Infineon, Applied Materials, ASML, Merck, Tokyo Electron Ltd, FujiFilm, AMD, Intel, Tata Electronics, Lam Research, Rapidus, NXP, Foxconn, Semi Conductor Devices, Advantest, Celesta Capital, CG Power, IBM Research among others.
According to the Indian government, the SEMICON India 2026 conference will focus on advancing collaboration, investment, innovation and talent development in India. The event will showcase the semiconductor materials, equipment and chip design to fabrication, advanced packaging, electronics and systems.
The exhibition will feature six country pavilions representing Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Singapore and Sweden, along with 12 state booths, a startup pavilion, innovation showcase, student hackathon and workforce development pavilion.
The Indian government launched the SEMICON India programme in 2021. According to the government, SEMICON 1.0 came with a ₹76,000 crore outlay. Covering the entire value chain from chip design and fabrication to packaging, testing, equipment, materials and skilled talent.
In July 2026, the government approved SEMICON 2.0, scaling that foundation with a ₹1,27,500 crore outlay. This is built around six pillars: chip design, semiconductor equipment and materials, fabrication facilities, advanced packaging, research and development, and talent development.
The government mentioned that till now 12 semiconductor projects have been approved across six states, with investment commitments exceeding ₹1.64 lakh crore. The projects span across silicon and compound semiconductor fabs, display fabrication and advanced packaging and three facilities have already started commercial production.
