Pentagon Expands GenAI.mil with Customized ChatGPT and Grok for 3 Million Personnel

The US Department of War on Monday announced that it has expanded its use of artificial intelligence by adding OpenAI’s ChatGPT Mil and Starshield AI’s Grok for Government to GenAI.mil, its enterprise generative AI platform.

According to the department, both AI systems have been accredited for Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) at Impact Level 5 (IL5), allowing them to be deployed for secure enterprise use within the department.

GenAI.mil has already onboarded more than 1.7 million unique users since its launch nine months ago, out of the department’s workforce of more than 3 million personnel, according to the Department of War.

ChatGPT Mil brings chat, files, projects and custom GPTs into the department’s secure environment. It is designed for document-heavy unclassified work, including planning, policy, logistics and administration, and is built to support more than 3 million personnel.

The ChatGPT Mil deployment represents the adoption phase of an enterprise partnership between the Department of War and OpenAI established in 2025.

Grok for Government includes deep-thinking inference, three reasoning modes – Auto, Fast and Expert – as well as customizable workspaces, persistent projects and reusable “playbooks”. The department said the system could be used for tasks ranging from market research for acquisition officials to supply chain management for logistics personnel.

The addition of the two systems expands GenAI.mil’s multi-model approach, giving the department access to AI tools from multiple providers rather than relying on a single vendor.

The move comes as the US government accelerates efforts to integrate frontier AI systems into military and administrative workflows.
