OpenAI on Tuesday introduced “ChatGPT for Teens” for users aged 13–17, amid rising concerns over AI use by young people. The company said it includes age-appropriate safety protections, learning tools and additional controls for parents.

According to OpenAI, the safeguards are designed to reduce exposure to content that may be “harmful or developmentally inappropriate.” They cover higher-risk areas including self-harm, violence, eating disorders, dangerous activities, and explicit sexual or graphic content. The company says the protections are informed by developmental science and expert guidance.

The teen version includes Study Mode, which uses guiding questions and step-by-step support, along with quizzes, Learning Visualizations and Responsible Homework Reminders. The homework feature can recognize when a teen appears to be trying to shortcut an assignment and redirect them to Study Mode for step-by-step collaborative problem-solving.

OpenAI and CodeAI have announced a partnership to provide students and educators with tools and resources to learn about and use AI.

“Every student should know how AI actually works and be able to question the technology, catch its mistakes, and know when to stop trusting it,” said Karim Meghji, CEO of CodeAI.

Parents or teens can choose Study Hours, during which Study Mode is on by default. Parents with linked teen accounts can also set Quiet Hours, manage selected settings and receive safety notifications in limited high-risk situations.

The service also includes break reminders that encourage teens to step away and cues that identify ChatGPT as AI. Sensitive-image upload reminders caution teens against sharing private or sensitive images.

For users under 18, ChatGPT is also designed not to use romantic language, encourage emotional dependence or imply that it has feelings or consciousness.

OpenAI says it is limiting what is shared through safety notifications and focusing on situations where offline support may matter most.

If OpenAI’s system estimates that someone is under 18, or the user states that they are between 13 and 17, they are automatically placed into ChatGPT for Teens.
