OpenAI has acquired Glass Imaging, an Israeli founded startup developing artificial intelligence technology to improve image quality in compact cameras. According to media reports the deal values Glass Imaging at more than $300 million, up from its valuation of about $100 million in a funding round last year.
The acquisition brings Israeli entrepreneur and former Apple engineer Ziv Attar, along with former Apple imaging engineer Tom Bishop, into OpenAI as the company expands its hardware ambitions. However, it remains unclear how OpenAI plans to use Glass Imaging’s technology.
Confirming the deal on X, the Israel’s ministry of foreign affairs tweeted: “Israeli innovation, once again at the center of what’s next. OpenAI is reportedly acquiring Israeli-founded Glass Imaging for over $300 million. Founded by Israeli former Apple engineer Ziv Attar, the startup uses AI to push the limits of cameras in smartphones, drones and wearables.”

Attar and Bishop founded Glass Imaging in 2019 after working at Apple. The company was established based on the idea that improvements in smartphone cameras were reaching a technological limit. Instead of relying mainly on larger sensors, additional cameras and more advanced optics, Glass Imaging developed AI-based technology to extract more information from existing camera hardware.
The company’s GlassAI technology uses AI to process raw image data and correct optical aberrations, sensor imperfections and noise. The company mentioned that its software can run on cameras using edge AI and can produce sharper and more detailed images while preserving actual image content rather than generating or hallucinating details.
In May 2025, Glass Imaging said its technology could boost the performance of cameras by ten times, a claim made by the company as it is planning to license its technology to manufacturers.
The acquisition gives OpenAI access to expertise at the intersection of AI, computational photography and compact hardware as the company expands its consumer-device ambitions. Glass Imaging’s technology could potentially help OpenAI build smaller devices capable of capturing and processing visual information more effectively, although the company has not disclosed how it intends to use the startup’s technology.
