Announcing Meta’s plans to introduce “personal superintelligence” AI agents “at free and affordable rates” for its users, its CEO Mark Zuckerberg said on Monday that frontier AI/tech/cloud companies should come together to build large amounts of compute for democratization of this advanced technology.
Meta has not claimed to have built superintelligence yet nor is there a set standard or parameter for building super intelligent AI agents.
In a blogpost on Monday, Zuckerberg said that Meta intends to provide highly personalized “superintelligence” AI agents that align with its users’ individualized personal/professional goals and can be accessed by any device including Meta glasses.
“For everyone to be part of the future, everyone must have the ability to use superintelligence to improve their lives and shape the world. We will offer free versions that will be accessible to billions of people. For those who want to pay to use more compute, there will be a dynamic auction mechanism that will guarantee that everyone gets the lowest price possible for the intelligence and compute they are using,” said Zuckerberg.
Sharing what Meta’s upcoming superintelligence AI agent would look like, Zuckerberg said, “Your agent will work 24/7 on your behalf to improve your relationships, health, career, finances, home management, hobbies, and more. It will free up time for the things you enjoy, and help you accomplish more than you could otherwise. You’ll be able to interact with your agent through any device, including your glasses to keep you present in the moment with the people you care about.”
Zuckerberg also claimed that if everyone had access to superintelligence, “then everyone will have the tools to create new things beyond what is possible today, and the economy will be more dynamic and generate more broad-based prosperity.”
Superintelligence refers to a theoretical state where artificial intelligence models/systems’ cognitive abilities and problem-solving skills vastly exceed that of humans. The current trajectory as per AI scientists is narrow AI—artificial general intelligence–superintelligence.
A debatable topic, many AI safety experts point towards the existential risks posed towards humanity by superintelligence where AI models learn recursive-self improvement and their actions can no longer be predicted by humans. Senators like Bernie Sanders and AI scientists like Geoffrey Hinton have criticized the notion of superintelligence calling it detrimental to humanity.
Vouching for democratization of this frontier technology, Zuckerberg said that U.S. government should bring in a framework to ensure all major frontier labs reach recursive self-learning (RSI) at the same time.
“Multiple labs could achieve RSI around the same time. If some or all of those superintelligences were somehow benevolent, then they could check and balance each other,” said Zuckerberg.
“Meta, other frontier labs, and clouds committed to giving people a greater balance of power must collectively build out a sufficiently large amount of compute such that we can allocate enough to recursive self-improvement to remain competitive while still committing the significant majority towards people’s individual goals,” he added.
