The Indian state of Maharashtra has partnered with Google for Education to provide AI training to more than four lakh teachers.

The programme will be implemented over the next 18 months.

The agreement aims to equip teachers with modern technological skills and promote AI-based learning in schools. Under the programme, selected ‘master trainers’ will undergo training before training teachers across the state.

According to the government the entire training programme will be provided free of cost by Google and there will be no financial burden on the state government.

The LoI was signed by Chris Phillips, Vice President of Google for Education, and Tahsildar, Joint Secretary in the Maharashtra School Education Department, in the presence of School Education Minister Dadaji Bhuse.

“Equipping teachers with modern skills has become the need of the hour in the age of Artificial Intelligence and digital technology,” said School Education Minister Dadaji Bhuse.

The government further highlighted that it will retain control over the entire process while keeping in mind the digital safety of teachers.

The initiative will focus on enhancing AI literacy and digital skills among teachers and providing localized training content in Marathi, Hindi and English. It also aims to promote the use of Google’s AI tools for educational purposes and strengthen teachers’ professional development.

In April, India’s Union Minister for Education, Dharmendra Pradhan, launched the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) curriculum on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Computational Thinking (CT) for students of Classes III to VIII.

Under the new curriculum, students will be trained to develop logical thinking, problem-solving skills and pattern recognition, while understanding the role of AI in daily life.

The curriculum will be implemented from the 2026–27 academic session and aims to develop AI-ready learners by strengthening computational thinking, digital literacy, responsible use of technology, innovation, critical thinking and ethical decision-making skills. The initiative is aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) 2023.

Google is introducing the Google AI Educator Series (GES), a mobile-first training programme designed for educators in schools and higher education institutions.

Google said the AI Educator Series was first launched in the United States to provide free Gemini training for K-12 and higher education faculty. The company is now expanding the initiative to India to help educators use Google AI responsibly and improve learning experiences.

The programme will be rolled out in collaboration with the governments of Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh and Assam, the Union Territory of Ladakh, and the Punjab School Education Board.

According to Google, the initiative will provide educators with training on how to use Google AI responsibly to improve learning experiences.

Google also said the broader Google AI Educator Series initiative will be localized into six Indian languages in its first year, including Assamese, Hindi, Marathi, Telugu, Odia and Punjabi, beginning with select state pilots.
