Google announced the launch of Google Gemini AI agent, designed to handle a range of workplace tasks, including answering questions, creating content, generating images and media, and writing and running code though a single interface and API.

According to Google the agent is designed to work autonomously on assigned objectives, connect with enterprise software and databases, and complete tasks within the tools employees already use. The company mentioned that it can place work, use tools and skills, and continue executing tasks in the cloud after users close their devices.

“Gemini can function as your personal assistant or as a team member, where it works on behalf of a group of people, like a project manager within a team, or on behalf of a specific role in an organization, like an analyst in your finance department,” Google said.

Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud said in a post on X that the single universal agent for work can be used for everything from knowledge work to answering questions, and content creation to coding, all from a single prompt box.

The agent supports multiple AI models, including Google’s Gemini models and Anthropic’s Claude models. Google said the agent selects the model best suited to each task, aiming to improve output quality and reduce costs. The company plans to support other leading proprietary and open models in the future.

The move comes as tech companies compete to develop AI agents that can work autonomously. The announcement comes after OpenAI launched in September always on agents called dots. Also last month Meta released Muse, a personal AI agent.
