French AI company Mistral has launched a public preview of its latest AI model Mistral Large 4 (ML4), aka, Le Chonk, a 1 trillion parameter natively multimodal model with 49 billion active parameters, claiming it to be their largest and most capable model yet.

Named after the viral obese orange cat “Le Chonk”, the AI model Mistral Large (ML4)’s training data spans more than 160 languages including every official language in the European Union.

The Le Chonk model has been trained in coordination with leading European enterprises in finance, engineering, manufacturing, logistics, pharmaceuticals, science, shipping, public sector among others, informed Mistral.

According to Mistral, the ML4 AI model’s weight will be released by October end and it will be available under EU laws across multiple regions worldwide.

“Until then, we are red-teaming the model in real-world settings with cybersecurity leaders, vetted partners, and state authorities, who will access the same model with reduced moderation and expanded cyber capabilities,” read a statement from Mistral.

Mistral claimed ML4 AI model to have “significantly outperformed any open-weight models developed in US and Europe” by the AI company. It also claimed state-of-the-art performance among open weight models on critical enterprise workloads, including cybersecurity, finance and law.

ML4 was trained from scratch on 3,800 NVIDIA Grace Blackwell GPUs at Mistral’s own datacenters in Europe, with the public preview being served on the same infrastructure.

“ML4 is one of the world’s strongest AI models for cybersecurity. On the Artificial Analysis Cyber Index, an independent evaluation of how well AI models find and fix security flaws in real software, it ranks among the top five models globally and leads open-weight models developed outside China by a wide margin,” Mistral said.

The company said several leading closed models, including Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Astra, scored near zero on the same vulnerability-reproduction test because they refused to perform the task.

Mistal said ML4 is the first milestone in a roadmap funded by its €3 billion Series D, which the company described as the largest equity round ever raised by a European technology company.

The company said the funding is already being put to work. “We are significantly scaling up our compute capacity in our own European datacenters, and much more is coming online in the months ahead,” the company said.
