AMD to Acquire Fei-Fei Li’s World Labs for $8.2 Billion in All-Stock Deal

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) said on Monday it would acquire World Labs, an artificial intelligence research lab led by Dr. Fei-Fei Li, in an all stock deal valued at $8.2 billion.

According to AMD, the acquisition will bring World Labs’ researchers and AI model experts to AMD as the chipmaker looks to strengthen its capabilities in developing AI hardware, software and systems for emerging AI models and applications.

AMD highlighted that World Labs’ expertise in developing advanced models will give it a deeper insight into how workloads are evolving and help shape its future technology roadmaps. The acquisition advances AMD’s strategy to deliver AI infrastructure for an open ecosystem.

“Building the compute platforms for the next generation of AI requires a deep understanding of how models are evolving,” said Dr. Lisa Su, chair and CEO, AMD.

She further mentioned that with the help of exceptional research leadership and model expertise which Word Labs brings, both AMD and World Labs can use that insight to develop the hardware, software and systems that will power the next generation of AI and strengthen the open AI ecosystem.

Meanwhile Dr. Fei-Fei Li will join AMD as an executive vice president and chief scientist, reporting to Dr. Lisa Su.. “Joining AMD will give our team the resources and engineering depth to accelerate our research and help define the infrastructure needed for the next era of AI,” she expressed.

Sharing the journey of World Labs till now which was founded in 2024 Dr. Fei-Fei Li mentioned that the AI research lab has built leading AI spatial intelligence capabilities for everything from creative work to design.

“We built the world leading model training team for images, video and spatial reconstruction. And, with the acquisition of SceniX, we’re building towards an industry leading capability for robotics simulation,” she further said.

World Labs has recently released Atlas, a first of its kind omni model architecture that solves a key outstanding problem in spatial intelligence: new camera view prediction. Like LLMs can predict the next token from a line of text, Atlas, trained from scratch, can predict the next view from an input of 2D images, outperforming state of the art results even by specialized models.
