In the 2021 American political satire-science fiction movie ‘Don’t Look Up’, actors Leonardo Di Caprio and Jennifer Lawrence, playing the character of two scientists, are trying their best to draw the attention of the world to an impending catastrophe – an extinction scale comet headed straight towards earth.
Instead of a global scale emergency response, what the scientists get is a tabloid-ish press trivializing risks, algorithm dividing opinions on social media and a tech billionaire funded President finding ways to mint money out of the comet.
Spoiler Alert, the planet Earth does not survive the comet landing.
Nearly five years later, the movie has found its way into the United States Senate, as Senator Bernie Sanders compared the comet to Artificial Intelligence (AI), saying America’s response to this revolutionary technology is eerily similar to the comet strike as shown in Don’t Look Up.
In his address at the US senate in the Capitol in Washington DC on July 23, Senator Sanders warned about the risks of uncontrolled AI.
“A couple of years ago, there was a movie that came out… Don’t Look Up… it was about a large comet heading to earth that would destroy the entire planet. And the scientists who discovered the comet kept trying to gain the attention of people and explain to them what was happening and the need for immediate action to save the planet,” said Sanders.
Comparing the comet in Don’t Look Up to advanced research in AI, Sanders said, “In that movie they failed as the planet was destroyed. That was a movie now lemme tell you something that is not a movie, not fiction but reality, I fear that we are living in the same scenario that existed in the movie. People, especially their elected representatives, are not paying attention and the results could be catastrophic.”
Discussing the possible ramifications of uncontrolled AI research, Sanders said, “If we are successful in building highly autonomous AI agents that outperforms humans in every sector then what happens to those workers who are replaced, how will they be able to find new jobs, if there are no jobs, how will people survive, support their families? Work is just one aspect, AI also threatens our emotional intelligence and well-being.”
The film Don’t Look Up told the story of scientists warning the world about a comet heading toward Earth.
People ignored the warnings. The planet was destroyed.
That was fiction.
Artificial intelligence is not. We cannot afford to ignore the warnings. https://t.co/jJG42i2gLc

In his 20-minutes long speech, Senator Sanders accused the wealthy tech billionaires of America of trying to profit from AI while ignoring the harmful repercussions it can have on society.
“Why are these multi-billionaires investing many hundreds and hundreds of billions of dollars into AI and robotics? Is it because they want to help humanity or address the income inequality in America? I think the answer is quite obvious ..they want to become even more wealthier and more powerful than what they are today. I think it’s important we take a hard look at what uncontrolled AI being pushed by the wealthiest people in our country will mean to ordinary Americans,” said Sanders.
Explained: Why are People Demanding Leash on AI Research?
From activists and workers’ unions to Congressmen and AI companies CEOs, there has been an increase in demands to put safeguards and a “kill switch” around frontier AI research in the past three months.
From Anthropic’s Claude Mythos and Claude Fable showing unprecedented capabilities to OpenAI’s autonomous agent hacking Hugging Face platform, recent incidents have come into light where AI models have shown signs of recursive self-improvement– a system where AI fully autonomously designs, codes, tests and builds its own superior successor– as well as end-to-end autonomous AI agents escaping sandbox on their own.
I went on GB News to talk about the AI model that broke out of OpenAI’s isolated test environment and hacked an external company, just to cheat on its own evaluation.

AI Safety researchers have warned that uncontrolled frontier AI research would one day result in artificial general intelligence (AGI) where AI agents match the capabilities of human beings and “superintelligence” where agents surpass humans in all domains. Recently, over 200 protestors under the banner of ‘Stop The AI Race’ ,marched outside the offices of AI companies in San Francisco demanding that they commit to a voluntary, global pause on AI.
The result, experts warn, could be catastrophic.
