Over 20 Tech companies including Meta, NVIDIA, Microsoft, Crowdstrike, Palantir, Perplexity, Mistral issued a joint statement to Congress advocating for open-weight AI models and an overall strong, open AI ecosystem in America.
The joint statement, issued on Friday, draws parallel to the 1980s open-source software movement that led to present day internet and underlies systems that are supported by the same software developed by a global open source community.
Advocating a similar approach towards AI, the tech companies said that the U.S. government should promote open-weight AI models rather than letting advanced AI technology be consolidated with few companies.
“Open weights expand access to the AI economy. Startups, established businesses, universities, and public institutions can build on advanced models without training one from scratch or paying frontier model prices for every task. Open weights let every organization match the right model to the right job at the right cost, reserving frontier-scale capability for genuine frontier problems and running efficient, specialized models everywhere else,” read the joint statement.
While acknowledging the risks posed by open-weight AI models, the tech companies advocated for a healthy competition in the AI ecosystem of America.
“Relying solely on closed models is not inherently safe: they can be breached, misused, or fail in ways that outsiders cannot detect. And concentrating advanced AI capabilities behind a small number of closed models compounds that risk. It results in a small number of single points of failure, weakens competition, and leaves critical technology in the hands of a few providers. Open weight models, on the other hand, allow a broad community of researchers and developers to examine their behavior, identify vulnerabilities, develop safeguards, and improve them over time,” read the statement.
Meanwhile NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang joined X on Friday and shared the joint statement as his debut post.

“AI will transform every industry, power every company, and be built by every country. Open models strengthen safety and cybersecurity, accelerate innovation and diffusion, and enable sovereignty. The world needs both frontier closed models and frontier open models,” wrote Huang on X.
Explained: What are Open-weight models?
An Open-weight model is an AI model whose trained parameters are publicly available for download.
Open weight models let developers run AI completely offline, keep sensitive data on their own servers, fine-tune models for specific industries, avoid paying per-token API fees and study and benchmark the model. Examples of open-weight models are Moonshot’s Kimi K3, Alibaba’s Qwen, and Google’s Gemma.
Unlike open-weight, closed-weight models neither allow AI to be downloaded and run locally nor it makes their training data set and training code available.
