San Francisco police arrested a 20-year-old man after he allegedly threw a Molotov cocktail at the home of Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, in the Russian Hill neighborhood and later made threats outside the company’s headquarters.
The attack occurred early Friday morning, and the suspect was detained within hours. No injuries were reported, and authorities said damage was minimal, though investigation remains ongoing.
According to officials, the suspect approached Altman’s residence at around 3:45 a.m. and hurled an incendiary device toward the property.
The device landed near the property’s exterior and did not cause significant structural damage. Surveillance footage captured the incident, which helped police identify and locate the suspect shortly afterward.
Later that morning, the same individual was seen outside OpenAI’s Mission Bay office on 3rd Street, where he allegedly threatened to burn down the building.
Police responded to reports of a man making threats and arrested him later that morning near the company’s headquarters. Authorities have not disclosed the identity or motive of the suspect.
Public concerns around the development and use of AI has grown in recent months, with increasing questions about its impact on society.
Following the attack, Altman wrote in a blog post that increasingly heated rhetoric around AI could have unintended real-world effects. Altman also addressed recent criticism of OpenAI and called for a more measured approach to public discourse, emphasizing the need to reduce tensions and avoid escalation.
