Criticizing the U.S. government for using AI as a “power tool”, French president Emmanuel Macron said that India and France believe in cooperative AI unlike the “temptations seen to close up AI models”, referring to the recent ban on access to Claude Fable AI model by non-Americans.
Speaking at the inaugural ceremony of ‘Bharat Innovates’ event in Nice, France on Sunday, Macron, in the presence of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, said, “Our two countries share the definition of a reliable, open and safe AI, that could be trusted, that could be responsible, that could be ethical.”
In recent days, we have seen the temptation to close up the AI models and to make them a power tool, and to stop any cooperation. That temptation is growing but India and France believe in a true partnership in multi-linguism respect and cooperative AI, an open model for the greater good(sic),” said Macron.
Last week, Anthropic AI, the creators of Claude family of AI models, announced that the U.S. government has asked them to withhold access to Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5 models to any and every non-American citizens, including foreign national employees of Anthropic, citing national security concerns.
In late April, Anthropic unveiled Claude Mythos, claiming it to be their most advanced AI model yet, and allowed its extremely controlled use to select organizations and countries.
The AI company refused to release Mythos model to public deeming it to be “too risky” and pro-actively demanded government regulations on Frontier AI research.
Later, Anthropic rolled out Claude Fable, a “safer version” of Claude Mythos with necessary guardrails to avoid its misuse by non-state actors. The development came even as Anthropic confidentially filed for an IPO, heading towards a valuation of $1 Trillion.
According to David Sacks, chair of U.S. President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, researchers at a tech giant that had access to Claude Mythos and Fable AI, managed to “jailbreak” the AI models. Jailbreaking in AI refers to manipulating Large Language Models (LLMs) or AI systems into discarding their safeguard measures and ethical guardrails.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi echoed the sentiments of President Macron on this occasion, and said, ““One decade ago, the world looked at India as a technology adopter. Today, India is emerging as a technology provider and whatever innovation India introduces, it benefits a large part of humanity… Bharat Innovates is an invitation to the world to co-create the next chapter of global innovation with India.”
