More than 1,200 employees of frontier AI companies have signed a public statement titled “Pacing the Frontier,” requesting the U.S. government to support an international effort to develop the technical and governance tools needed to deliberately pace the frontier of automated AI development.
The statement, published on Tuesday. said AI could help create a dramatically better future, but warns that outcome isn’t guaranteed. It notes that the world’s leading AI companies believe they may be close to automating AI research, it warns that there is a real risk that capability development could rapidly accelerate beyond the world’s ability to understand or control the resulting systems.
It argues that industry, government, and society may need time to address emerging risks and build security measures in order to realize AI’s true potential.
But the issue, it says, is that competitive pressure on both companies and countries makes it hard for any single actor to slow down unilaterally. The statement adds that the world currently lacks the technical and governance tools to deliberately pace frontier-wide progress, building on existing efforts to monitor frontier model releases.
The document has been signed by a number of specialists from companies such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta, and others. Although the document has been signed by people speaking on their own behalf rather than for their firms, they expressed concern about the speed at which their companies and countries are advancing AI capabilities.
Notable signatories include Anthropic Co-Founder and Chief Science Officer Jared Kaplan; OpenAI Chief Scientist Jakub Pachocki; OpenAI Chief Research Officer Mark Chen; Meta AI Chief Scientist Shengjia Zhao; Google DeepMind Chief Strategy Officer Jasjeet Sekhon; Google VP of AI Safety and Alignment Anca Dragan; and Google DeepMind Senior Director Allan Dafoe.
Even though signatories have different viewpoints on exactly how to pace AI development, they generally agree on the importance of cooperation between countries, a stronger oversight system, and investment in AI safety.
