The application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into Brain Computer Interface (AI) is an advanced technology that explores “human-AI symbiosis” with machine learning.

While BCI technology has been around for a while, AI has now turned into its main engine, finding complex solutions in the fields of medical sciences, linguistics and speech/motor therapy.

Brain Computer Interface (BCI)is a technology that forms a direct communication link between the human brain and an external device through invasive as well as non-invasive tools that record, store and interpret electrical signals from the neurons of the human brain.

Machine Learning and Deep Learning help BCI in identifying patterns and predict user behaviour from massive data sets with scientists and researchers claiming improved results.

For example, researchers at UC San Francisco and UC Berkeley were able to restore natural speech of a 47-year-old woman, who was unable to speak for near two decades, using BCI with AI.

BCIs are used particularly in speech/motor therapy along with finding treatment for rare diseases like Parkinson’s. They are also increasingly being used for research in the fields of cognitive science and mental health.

While BCI and AI hold promises in several fields, watchdogs have warned against the potential misuse of this advanced technology pertaining to mental privacy and cybersecurity.
