The Association for Human Mathematics (AHM) has urged mathematicians to “discontinue their work with OpenAI” after the company released a repository of mathematical documents produced by an internal (unreleased) frontier AI model.
OpenAI has published 722 documents spanning 372 groups of results, which the company said include solutions to, or significant progress on, hundreds of open problems in mathematics and theoretical computer science.
The association also rejected OpenAI’s claim that the release advances mathematics, urging mathematicians and the public to view the value of its publication model “with due skepticism.”
In a statement, AHM said OpenAI had released manuscripts purporting to contain solutions to a number of high-profile mathematical problems, despite what the association described as contrary guidance from the Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence.
“Mathematicians did not ask for this work to be done,” AHM said.
The association said the advisory group’s initial statement argued that frontier AI companies should not test advanced mathematical problems on internal models. AHM accused OpenAI of ignoring what it called the central premise of the group’s position and said this demonstrated a “total disregard for the norms of scientific research.”
According to AHM, those norms are intended to ensure that mathematics remains trustworthy, ethically researched and in the public interest.
AHM also challenged the significance of OpenAI’s large-scale release, saying: “Releasing over 700 files at once is not a demonstration of scholarship, but a demonstration of power.”
The association said mathematicians have a distinct view of progress shaped by the history and practices of the field. It called on researchers to return to “a vision of science that centers human understanding.”
OpenAI announced the release on October 6, saying it was publishing a broad range of new mathematical results generated by an internal frontier model. The company also published supporting materials on GitHub, including papers, citation and revision protocols, and formalised versions of many proofs.
We’re releasing a broad range of new mathematical results produced by an internal frontier model.
We’ve been consulting with the independent Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence at the Institute for Advanced Study, and we have drawn on their advice and public recommendations to inform how we release these results.

OpenAI said the formal proofs were written in Lean, a programming language that allows mathematical arguments to be checked computationally.
The company described the release as part of its efforts to demonstrate advances in AI-driven mathematical research, including unsolved questions such as the Navier–Stokes existence and smoothness problem.
