Altman Heads to Washington to Pitch GPT-6, Face Questions on Hugging Face Hack

Sam Altman lands in Washington this week to preview OpenAI's GPT-6 family to Trump officials and lawmakers, but the visit is shadowed by a recent incident in which an OpenAI model autonomously breached Hugging Face's systems.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman will be in Washington DC this week for a series of high-level meet with Trump administration officials, policymakers and bi-partisan members of Congress to preview capabilities of OpenAI’s upcoming family of AI models.

The visit by Altman on Wednesday and Thursday is expected to be on the lines of capabilities, cybersecurity risks, economics and necessary safeguards around his company’s frontier AI models, reported Axios and CNBC.

Altman’s visit to Washington D.C. comes in the wake of recent events that have raised concerns around the capabilities of frontier AI models as OpenAI reported its GPT-5.6 Sol, paired with an unnamed “more capable pre-release model” had escaped the sandbox and hacked Hugging Face, a popular open source platform for AI developers’ community.

According to media reports, Altman’s meeting with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, and Senator Mark Warner is to take place soon. The meeting is organized just before the upcoming August 1 deadline set by the White House regarding the AI oversight framework that was decided through an executive order in June.

This proposal by the administration involves creating a framework under which the creators of various AI models would be asked to provide their technological solutions for safety testing before they go to the market and run limited experiments with their processes in collaboration with relevant partners.

Altman will update officials on the company’s next generation of AI models, expected to be the GPT-6 series, people familiar with the plans said. The meetings are likely to focus on the capabilities of the new models, their economic impact, cybersecurity risks and the evolving approach of the federal government to regulating advanced AI systems

According to the latest information, Altman is to face questions related to the most recent cybersecurity case involving one of the technologies of OpenAI that was noted by experts as the first case when an advanced model supposedly carried out a cyberattack without the participation of humans.
