India, Japan Launch AI Strategic Dialogue, Focus on Policy and Industry Collaboration

India and Japan conducted their first AI strategic dialogue aimed at promoting bilateral cooperation and shared consensus across the artificial intelligence (AI) stack, in order to co-create a “safe, secure, and trustworthy AI” ecosystem.

A delegation of Japan’s Foreign Affairs Ministry visited Mumbai and Bengaluru cities of India on April 21 and 22 to participate in the maiden discussion under JAI (Japan India AI Cooperation Initiative) with counterpart representatives from India.

The discussion focussed on strategic cooperation in the AI ecosystem with a view to promoting co-creation, enhancing policy convergence, and encouraging the development of AI solutions in industrial domains to foster a robust, innovative and trustworthy AI ecosystem.

The Dialogue also explored avenues to strengthen international mobility of AI talent and expand joint research through exchanges and collaborative projects. Furthermore, both sides deliberated on international cooperation in AI governance, policy formulation, and engagement in multilateral fora,” read a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs India.

India was represented by Amit A. Shukla, Joint Secretary (Cyber Diplomacy),MEA and Japan by Hanada Takahiro, Deputy Assistant Minister for Cyber Security, Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Japan based companies Aeterlink, EdgeCortix, Fujitsu Research of India Pvt. Ltd.,HIGHRESO, I’mbesideyou, ONESTRUCTION, Tier IV, and Indian companies BharatGen and Sarvam also participated in the meet.

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was also signed between ONESTRUCTION, a Japanese company specializing in construction data and AI solutions and DataKaveri Systems Private Limited, operation of India Urban Data Exchange (IUDX).
