Days after it was branded as a “supply-chain risk” and blacklisted from Federal agencies, AI firm Anthropic has sued the U.S. Department of Defense alleging that the actions of the U.S. government were unconstitutional and violated its first amendment rights.

Anthropic filed two lawsuits against the Department of Defense on Monday in the northern district of California and U.S. court of appeals for the Washington DC Circuit. The lawsuits come after a month-long standoff between Anthropic and the U.S. government over use of Claude for classified military networks.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei had objected to the use of Claude for mass domestic surveillance and fully autonomous AI weapons, insisting that his firm will not remove key safety guards from Claude AI model.

The standoff was further aggravated when U.S. President Donald Trump branded Anthropic CEO as a “leftwing nutjob” and threatened to blacklist Anthropic from every Federal service of the country.

Post Trump’s statement, the Pentagon officially branded Anthropic as a “supply-chain” risk on last Thursday even as it was reported that Claude AI was used in the ongoing US and Israel offensive against Iran.
